House Fire on St. Rt. 124

“There was little we could do to save the house, being as old as it is”, the fire chief explained.

On Friday afternoon, around 5:30, the fire department was called to a house fire on State Rt. 124, approximately one-half mile past the Corner Market towards Latham, Ohio.

It was reported by Benton Fire Chief Steve Fields that the fire had been started by a boy. He was in the garage filling the gas tank of a lawn mower when the gasoline exploded.

“There was little we could do to save the house, being as old as it is”, the fire chief explained. As the fire crew worked hard to extinguish the flames, fire consumed nearly the entire house.

Traffic was jammed on both sides of St. Rt. 124. Motorists waited long periods of time before they could see the burning house although, billows of black smoke was seen for miles around.

The fire chief also reported that the residents had escaped the house and that no one had been seriously hurt in the house fire.

More photos can be seen in the July 15, 2005 album.

I wish I could tell my readers more information, but the Pike Co. Sheriff’s office would not answer any questions.

For the record, this is why I don’t allow large bonfires only feet away from my house.

No. I meant that remark for something that happened at my place. The landlord gave these people to tear down and burn down a trailer not very far behind me. I begged that they not burn a big bonfire. They laughed me off and said they was going to. For the next few days they burnt non stop, only quitting when they was ready to leave. They did not put out the fire or let it burn down before they left. Me and my husband had to watch out for ourselves and everyone else by supervising the fire, both when they left for the night and when they would leave it unattended during the day as well and go up the road and be gone for long lengths of time. Flameballs from where things was exploding would shoot out continually. When it would shoot towards our house, we watched to make sure it didn’t get out of hand. We went to leave and since no one was around I went to check it before we left. What I found was the feild that the fire bordered had caught fire, possibly from an exploding fireball. It had burnt into the middle hieghth of the weeds and was shooting across as the fire burned its way up the top thickness of the weeds. I yelled for my husband and he went to work right away to put out the fire. It took him quite a while to spray water enough to put it out. While he is trying to put out the fire, he is yelling for these ‘careless?’ people to get their butts over to the fire. They strolled along, laughing all the way. I called 911 long before they came down. One man laughed at me and said ‘I ain’t going to be in trouble. The landlord man is going to be the one in trouble.’
A couple days later I was told that this same man had threatened to burn my home down to get back at me. And I have three children!
I wrote an article about it, but didn’t post it because I was afraid of what would happen. I will upload some photos into an album so that you can see it. Too bad I don’t have the money to buy a good digital camera. The cheap thing I bought only takes good pictures when it wants to!

i don’t see where this fire is so out of control.Looks like it was very weel supervised,i also thought trailers burned down in only a few hours?

I never finished uploading the pictures. it was not supervised. the fire department had to come because the fire had burned into the underbrush of the field. In other words, it caught fire in the middle heighth of the weeds then burnt slowly up the weeds while it burnt quicker in the middle. that was how the fire moved into the feild. at the time the fire deptment was called, the fire starters was down the road!
